Sherlock Holmes Film Free SherlockHolmes Movie Review Poster

Sherlock HolmesI’ll admit it, I have no idea what really happens in Sherlock Holmes. It’s one of the few movies where the audience doesn’t figure everything out up front and then wait through an hour or so of filler just to see it all play out as predicted. The plot’s confusing and convoluted, but refreshingly so. Does it make sense? I don’t know, but it doesn’t matter since getting to the end of the story and the final reveal is a whole lot of fun

What’s absolutely obvious even to me, having admitted I didn’t follow all the ins and outs of the story, is that the plot revolves around an aristocrat named Lord Blackwood (the always terrific scene-stealer Mark Strong) who’s engaged in black magic…or so everyone assumes. Caught in the act of attempting to murder a young woman by Holmes and Watson, Lord Blackwood is sentenced to death. We watch him die…or so we believe. But even death can’t stop Lord Blackwood from terrorizing London. With the game afoot, Holmes and Watson must figure out how Blackwood cheated death, how he’s able to pull the strings of some very powerful people, what his ultimate plan is for the city he’s set on edge, and how he manages to always stay one step ahead of the police

It’s finally time for Guy Ritchie’s good ol’ English detective novel turned blockbuster, Sherlock Holmes to hit the screen with mega-stars Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law, and Rachel McAdams. From deconstructing sight scenes to watching Watson and Holmes bickers like an old married couples, this is definitely the entertaining adventure that you’re all hoping it will be

Script begins in London, 1891. Holmes and Watson are on the trail of cult leader Lord Blackwood in the sewers along the Thames. They find and arrest him just as he is about to carve up his eigth victim and sacrifice during an occult ritual.

Cue six months later and Watson is about to ask Mary to marry him, something which has put a strain on the relationship between the two men, as Holmes feels it will be the end of their partnership. When Lord Blackwood summons the detective to his cell on the day of his upcoming execution, he tells Holmes that he will escape, kill him and rule London. Something which appears impossible as Holmes and Watson watch him getting his head chopped off on the grounds of the Tower of London.

The following day the Blackwood family tomb has been found broken into, with Blackwood’s body gone. Holmes and Watson are set on a chase throughout London, as more and more indications show that Lord Blackwood is indeed alive, and may be about to overthrow the throne of England. Each step of the way they are preceded by conwoman Irene Adler, the only one to ever best Sherlock Holmes.

Overall, it’s a good script with some great new interpretations of the classic Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson characters. Making Holmes something like a troubled and probably slightly autistic man, with Watson as a more practical and direct partner is what makes the entire script work. The conflict between this gruffer Watson and unstable Holmes is a good driving force. Interspersed with some good humor, the entire script works on this basis alone. Spending time with these characters felt like a fresh experience.

Its main problem is that it’s a Sherlock Holmes movie without much of a central mystery and a superficial villain. At times the plot requires characters that are supposed to be the smartest guys in the room to act and think like complete dimwits. It’s sacrificed a potentially compelling and clever story for long action set-pieces and chases throughout London.

The draft is dated March 14 2008. Filming began October 3 2008. Hopefully Ritchie got someone in there to give this script some more meat. Still, the casting is aces, so it should be an enjoyable time none the less.
